Ellison Orr was born near McGregor, Iowa, attended rural schools in Allamakee County and graduated from Postville High School. He taught school and worked in a bank in Postville, farmed, served as clerk of the district court, and spent 2 years selling land in Canada, the Dakotas, Kansas and Oklahoma. From 1904 until his retirement in 1930 Orr worked for the telephone company in Waukon. Following his retirement he devoted himself to his avocation of archaeology.
